Description
The lamp standard located in the pavement next to the gable of 24 Toll Gavel in Beverley dates from 1824 to 1826 and is a late Georgian cast iron piece made by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, it bears the inscriptions 'I MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824'. Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. Above this, an octagonal step leads to the column, which is designed in the style of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Rising from a narrow collar is a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
