Description
This is an office building dated to the 1890s. It is constructed of red brick with a tiled roof and is designed in a Late Flemish Gothic style. The building is two storeys high with an attic, comprising nine bays. It has a four-bay curved facade facing Hanover Street and a curved corner bay facing Price Street.
The ground-floor windows have trefoil heads and tympana with blind tracery and moulded sills. All windows feature small-paned casements. The corner bay has a two-light window set within a flat architrave and cornice. An elliptical-arched entrance, located in the fifth bay, features a stone architrave and 20th-century glass doors. The first floor has a moulded string course and fluted pilasters framing pairs of bays; the windows are headed and sit on moulded sills. The corner to Price Street has an octagonal tower with a moulded base that blends into the wall. Paired elliptical-headed windows are at the first-floor level, with similar windows below. Above these is a swept tiled spire with a lead finial. Three shaped gables span the first to sixth bays, each featuring fluted pinnacles; two gables incorporate canted wooden oriels supported on brackets. The end bays have a 1930s attic storey with sill and lintel bands. A late 20th-century bay entrance has been added to the Hanover Street facade to accommodate No. 10. The Price Street facade has a utilitarian appearance. The building was originally constructed as the Gordon Smith Institute for Seamen.
