Description

The Old Bridewell, which includes the boundary wall along the streets to the south and east, is a police station built around 1850. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays. It features a stone plinth, a first-floor sill course, a top frieze, and a cornice. The centre bay projects and forms the base of a short tower. The ground floor windows have stone lintels, and all windows are sashed with glazing bars. The entrance, located on the return of the centre bay, has a rusticated architrave with a lion's head keystone and a stone plaque above it. The first-floor windows have architraves, while the tower has two-light windows with round heads, moulded stone arches, and sills. The roofs are hipped, with the tower roof topped by a finial.

The Campbell Street facade also consists of three bays, with the end bays projecting. There are inserted windows with wedge lintels on either side of the central first-floor window. The building has four stacks with stone caps and a later ventilation tower at the rear, which features two-light openings and a machicolated cap. This tower serves as a ventilating shaft for the original windowless cells on the ground floor, which are accessed through an iron door. Surrounding the building on both street fronts is a brick wall approximately 12 feet tall, topped with rounded stone coping. The bevelled corner of the wall is surmounted by a foliated iron lampholder with an anthemion motif, positioned above a plain doorway.
