Description
The Former Sick Horse Infirmary, also known as Building 48, is a store built between 1843 and 1848 by Major T. Foster for the Ordnance Board. It is constructed of snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a rear lateral stack and a slate roof. The building has a single-depth plan that backs against the perimeter wall.
The exterior is single storey with a five-window range. It has coped end gables and central doorways that have been altered, now featuring mid-20th century doors. There are small windows on each side of the doorways with segmental-arched lintels and tilting metal-framed windows. The south side has similar small windows that were altered in the mid-20th century, along with a mid-20th century doorway in between. The rear perimeter wall elevation has inserted windows.
The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of the original plan for the barracks, which included ancillary buildings along the perimeter wall. Fulwood Barracks is noted for being the most complete example in Britain of the late 18th century concept of barracks design.
