Description
The Former Infantry Barracks at Fulwood Barracks, built between 1842 and 1848 by Major T Foster of the Royal Engineers for the Ordnance Board, is now used as offices and barracks. Constructed in a Late Georgian style, the building features rock-faced sandstone ashlar with ashlar cross-axial ridge stacks and a slate roof. It has a single-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a range of 38 windows.
The exterior consists of a long range with a similar rear elevation and coped end gables, divided into six sections of five windows each, with central entrances. The end sections have four windows and entrances toward the ends. The doorways have plain ashlar surrounds, with steps leading up to mid to late 20th-century doors. The windows are mostly 6/6-pane sashes, many of which have been replaced by matching top-hung casements, and there is a smaller window above the doorways.
The interior has been altered for a mid to late 20th-century conversion to offices. Historically, this barracks was designed as one of two for an infantry battalion, with the other barracks now demolished. It was built in response to concerns over Chartist agitation. Although the original barracks plan of two parade squares within a defensible perimeter wall has been lost, the overall layout remains substantially intact, making Fulwood the most complete surviving example in England of the late 18th-century concept of barracks design.
