Description
This is a row of eight small town houses located on Frenchwood Street, built around 1830 and altered over time. The houses are constructed of red brick in a five-plus-one English garden wall bond, although Nos. 3 and 4 are now roughcast, No. 6 is painted red, and No. 8 has been rebuilt. They feature sandstone dressings and a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, with a through-lobby in the center of each pair.
The buildings are two storeys high with cellars, each house consisting of two bays. They have a plain frieze and a moulded gutter cornice. The doorways of each pair are accessed by two steps, except for Nos. 4, 5, and 6, which have altered steps. The doorways form a triplet with the lobby door between them and are adorned with round-headed architraves featuring set-in Tuscan quarter columns, plain lintels, and semicircular fanlights with hollow-moulded surrounds and altered glazing, along with altered doors.
Each house has one window on the ground floor and two on the upper floor, all with raised sills. The ground floor windows have wedge lintels, while the cellar windows also have wedge lintels, with Nos. 6, 7, and 8 protected by gratings. Ridge chimneys are located at the junctions of the pairs. The rear and interior of the houses were not inspected, but it is known that there are former laundry cellars under the front rooms. This row is part of a previously complete set of late Georgian lower-middle class town houses on this street.
