Description

Nos. 53 and 54 Frenchwood Street are a pair of small town houses built around 1835, with some alterations. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with tuck-pointing at No. 53, and feature sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The houses have a double-depth halls-adjoining plan, with no through-lobby, and each is single-fronted with coupled back extensions.

The buildings are two storeys high over cellars, with a total of four bays; they have a first-floor sill-band, a plain frieze, and a moulded gutter cornice. The doorways are centrally located and coupled, featuring round-headed architraves with set-in Tuscan quarter columns, plain lintels, and semicircular fanlights with convex moulded surrounds. No. 54 has a panelled door, while the door at No. 53 has been altered. Each house has one window at the ground floor and two above, with No. 54 having sashed windows without glazing bars (the glazing at No. 53 has been altered). All windows have raised sills and wedge lintels, and the cellar windows have rectangular lintels protected by gratings. Gable chimneys are present on both houses. The rear and interior of the buildings were not inspected. These houses are part of what was once a complete set of late Georgian lower-middle class town houses on this street.
