Description

The Boy Scout War Memorial is a structure commemorating Nelson scouts who died in the First World War, built in 1919 by Job Davies. It is made of buff-coloured Yorkshire grit stone.

The memorial features a carved figure of a Boy Scout in historic uniform, standing at attention on a tall, square pedestal that is set on a square plinth. The scout holds a tall staff in his right hand, with his left arm bent at a right angle across his body. He is dressed in a broad-brimmed hat, a long-sleeved shirt with a neckerchief and lanyard, shorts, knee socks with garters, and boots. A small hatchet is attached to the back of his belt. The base of the memorial is partially squared and inscribed with the words "BE PREPARED," and it has a rocky background.

The pedestal features relief-carved triangular pediments on each face, inset with decorative foliate panels. At the base of the pedestal, there is deep cyma reversa moulding with relief-carved acanthus leaves at the corners. The front face of the pedestal displays a laurel wreath flanked by a scrolled ribbon that is dated 1914 / 1919. The front face is also inscribed with "TO THE / Glorious Memory / OF THE / Nelson Scouts / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR." The left-side face bears the inscription "SACRIFICE," while the right-side face reads "FOR US." The pedestal is supported by a wide, square plinth.
