Description

The Dower House at Thurnham Hall is a house built in the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and late 19th centuries. It is constructed of brick with a sandstone plinth and dressings, topped with a slate roof. The house is two storeys high and is attached to the rear wing of Thurnham Hall.

On the east wall, there are two string courses. The ground floor features four sashed windows with plain stone surrounds. On the first floor, there is a blank recess to the left, followed by a sashed window with glazing bars and a rebated and chamfered surround. Next to it is a Venetian window with glazing bars and Gothick tracery. Further right, there are four more sashed windows with glazing bars and plain stone surrounds. To the right of the second ground-floor window, there is a door with a glazed porch and a cyma-moulded surround. The house has chimneys located to the right of the first and second ground-floor windows and on the right-hand gable.

The west wall includes a drip course. The ground floor has three sashed windows with plain stone surrounds, while the first floor has two similar windows, with the left-hand one flanked by blank recesses. Further right, there are three rebated and chamfered cross windows, with the outer ones blocked. Next to the middle window is one with a plain stone surround, a round head, and glazing bars with Gothick tracery. There is a door to the right of the second ground-floor window, featuring a chamfered surround, and at the far right, there is a lean-to porch.

Inside, there are no exposed features of architectural interest, but the hardwood roof trusses include tie beams, light collars, and raking queen struts.
