Description
The Skerton Liberal Club is a building that was originally a house, dating from the early 19th century, with later additions from the late 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof. The building has a double-depth, three-unit plan, with a later addition on the left-hand side.
The original house is three stories tall and has three bays, designed in a symmetrical Classical style with rusticated quoins. It has a central doorway framed by an Ionic porch, which consists of two pilasters and two columns supporting an entablature with a prominent cornice. This porch protects a recessed door with an overlight, both of which have been altered. The windows throughout the building are 16-pane sashes with projecting sills and plain reveals, topped with a moulded cornice. There are chimneys located on the gables.
To the right of the main building, there is an attached ashlar screen wall that is set back and reaches half-height. At the left end, the one-bay addition features a three-light sashed window in a 17th-century style with a hoodmould at the first floor, and this end of the roof is hipped. The rear facades of the building have been altered.
