Description

Canal Cottages Nos 4 and 5, located on the south side of Pottery Road in Wigan, are two cottages associated with the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, likely built in the mid to late 19th century. They are constructed of brick and topped with slate roofs, forming a T-plan with a range parallel to the canal and a crosswing at the south end.

The cottages are two storeys high and feature three windows on the left side and one on the right. No. 4 is double-fronted and nearly symmetrical, showcasing a square-headed doorway with an overlight and a hood-mould. Above this, there is a sashed window with margin panes and a similar hood-mould, flanked by tripartite sashes on both floors, all with hood-moulds. A small inserted window is located to the right of the upper left sash. No. 5 continues to the right and has one tripartite sash on each floor, a doorway in the angle with the wing, one window on each floor of the re-entrant, and a two-light sashed window on each floor of the gable. The roofs have a shallow pitch with oversailing eaves and verges, featuring a gable chimney at the left end and ridge chimneys on both ranges.

The attached boundary wall at the front is made of coursed gritstone blocks with rounded coping, standing approximately 1.5 meters high. It ramps up at the left end and includes gateways aligned with the front doors of each cottage, each with plain monolithic piers that have rounded tops. There is a larger but similar gateway to the left of the ramp, and the wall continues beyond that.

These cottages are part of an interesting group with Trencherfield Mill, which towers above them to the rear.
