Description
Lock 23 on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is a canal lock built in 1816 by John Rennie and has since been restored. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone blocks, although the coping has been replaced with concrete. The lower end features wooden gates, while the upper end has steel gates. On the south side of the lower end, there is an inscription that reads "L No.XXIII," along with an oval metal plate marked "87." A modern metal footbridge spans the lower end, likely replacing an earlier wooden footbridge.
