Description

The Hugh Mason memorial statue is a Grade II listed statue located in Trafalgar Square, Ashton-under-Lyne. It was created in 1887 by sculptor J.W. Swynnerton and features a life-size bronze statue of Hugh Mason, set on a polished granite pedestal. The pedestal is inscribed with "Hugh Mason, born 1817 died 1886." Hugh Mason was a well-respected local industrialist and philosopher known for establishing Oxford Mills and constructing nearby workers' housing. The statue was originally situated in Chester Square before being relocated to its current position in the mid-1990s.
