Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland is a bank building located on Mosley Street in Manchester, constructed in 1862 by Edward Walters for the Manchester and Salford Bank, with an extension added around 1880 by Barker and Ellis. The building is designed in the Italian palazzo style and features ashlar stonework with slate roofs. It has a rectangular plan situated on an end-of-block site, with a portal on the left and an extension beyond it.

The original structure consists of three storeys and seven bays. It has a massive vermiculated plinth and a tall ground floor characterized by banded piers and a modillioned cornice that supports balustraded balconies above the first-floor windows. The upper floors are pilastered, featuring Ionic corner pilasters, and topped with a large bracketed cornice and a balustraded parapet adorned with urns. The ground floor includes plate glass windows with geometric tracery, while the first floor has sash windows with pedimented architraves, including a central window that is segmental and supported by columns. The second floor has shorter sash windows with moulded architraves.

The right-hand return to York Street consists of six bays that match the original style. To the left, there is a single-storey portal with Tuscan columns, large consoles supporting a prominent cornice, and a balustraded parapet with urns. The extension to the left is three storeys high and has four bays, designed to match the original building's style.

Inside, the bank features a very fine banking hall with columns and a coffered ceiling. This building represents the last significant work of architect Edward Walters.
