Description

The Ritz Dance Hall is a dance hall built in 1927, which has been altered since its construction. It features a brick structure with a white glazed terracotta facade, and its roof is not visible. The building has a rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street and is designed in a free 20th-century classical style. It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of 1:7:1 bays.

The facade includes a plinth and channelled rustication on the ground floor, with a horizontal canopy over the ground floor that is suspended on tie-rods and now features a 20th-century fascia. The upper floor is pilastered and topped with a cornice and stepped parapet. The ground floor has a wide central entrance with a range of 20th-century doors and three small windows in the outer bays, which are either blocked or blind, all featuring keystones and voussoirs. The upper floor has a pilastraded seven-bay panel with a moulded surround that includes roundels. The five central bays contain vertical-rectangular windows with moulded cornices above them, while the first and seventh bays have blind windows. The end bays feature paired windows set in sunk panels, also with similar cornices.

Inside, the building retains original features such as a balcony supported by Tuscan columns, pilastered walls, and a revolving stage, which is no longer functional, flanked by altered staircases. Historically, The Ritz Dance Hall was a venue for many well-known dance bands during the 1930s and 1940s. It is included in the heritage register as a now rare example of its type and date, representing earlier 20th-century popular culture.
