Description

Albert Warehouse and Victoria Warehouse are warehouses built in the early to mid-19th century, with some alterations. They are constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and have a slate roof. The quay features very large dressed stone blocks. The Victoria Warehouse is L-shaped, with one range running at right angles to the street and the other parallel to the quay, while the Albert Warehouse continues from the north end of the Victoria Warehouse. The buildings rise five storeys high.

The west front, facing the river, consists of a continuous range of 9 plus 7 windows, along with 4 loading slots. The southern half of the Victoria Warehouse features 5-stage loading slots at the south end and near the centre, dividing the windows into groups of 4 and 5. These slots have timber sills, board doors, and pitched wooden canopies. The Albert Warehouse has round-headed 5-stage loading slots at the junction and near the centre, dividing the windows into groups of 3 and 4. Between these slots is a large basket-arched doorway that rises through two storeys, framed by a rusticated quoined surround, and now fitted with sliding doors and protected by remnants of a wooden pentice.

Both warehouses have low 6-pane tilting casement windows, most of which are damaged, with raised stone sills and flat-arched heads. The Victoria Warehouse features a hipped roof, while the Albert Warehouse has a stone frieze, cornice, blocking course, and raised coped gables. The return side and rear facing Water Street are generally similar, but the Victoria Warehouse has two blocked basket-arched doorways with quoined surrounds. Inside, there are iron columns with wide timber pads supporting timber beams.
