Description
Vale House is a house that has been converted into a social club, built in 1834 for the Crompton family, who were the founders of the Stoneclough Paper Mill. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. It has two storeys and four bays, with the second bay protruding slightly forward, while the recessed bay to the right has an added second storey. The structure has a stone base, a first-floor sill band, and a top frieze and cornice. The windows are fitted with gauged-brick flat arches and are sashed with glazing bars, with the central bay of the first-floor window set in an architrave. The end bay on the ground floor features a canted bay window, and there are additional windows on the right return of the third bay. The entrance is highlighted by an Ionic porch with paired columns, a segmental fanlight with glazing bars, and a doorcase that includes glazed side panels and paired three-panel doors. At the rear, there is a central conservatory, while the left return has a 20th-century extension that is of no special interest. The building was converted into residential dwellings in 2000.
