Description

The remains of a Roman military amphitheatre, dating from the 2nd century, are located in Chester City. Constructed from sandstone, the visible remains include parts of the lower stonework of the northern half of the amphitheatre, featuring up to 14 courses of stone wall between the theatre and the auditorium. The lower side walls of the vomitorium are present to the north, with a narrower access point to the east. The foundation lines of the northern half of the auditorium are indicated by concrete strips in the grass. The southern half of the theatre and auditorium is hidden behind a high wall, and any remains there are currently completely covered.
