Description
16 Eastgate Street and 16 Eastgate Row South is a building that was constructed as an undercroft, Row, and townhouse, likely in the late 18th century. In the early 20th century, the undercroft served as the Great Western Railway’s parcel office, while the Row shop operated as a stationery shop. The property was auctioned in 1927, and alterations and additions to the Row shop were approved in 1928. The shopfronts and interiors were modified in the late 20th century, and by the early 21st century, the undercroft and Row were used for separate retail purposes, with additional uses above.
The building has four storeys, including the undercroft and Row. The undercroft is at street level and features a modern shopfront with rendered end-piers that extend through the undercroft and Row storeys. The Row level has a plain iron railing, two Doric-derived cast-iron columns at the front opening, and a cornice. It includes a stallboard that measures 2.05 meters from front to back, and the Row shop has a modern shopfront.
On the third storey, there is a painted-stone sill band beneath two recessed six-over-six sash windows with painted wedge lintels. The fourth storey features a sill band below two recessed three-over-six sash windows with painted wedge lintels. The building has a parapet cornice made of painted stone and a lateral chimney on the east side. A lead rainwater head is shared with 20 Eastgate Row.
Inside, the features in the undercroft and Row storeys are covered. However, the over-Row parlour and partitions on the third storey are largely intact, and the roof structure is visible in the fourth storey.
