Description

Numbers 25 and 27 Street and Numbers 29 and 31 Row are an undercroft and town house, now used as an undercroft office, Row shop, and storage. The current front dates to around 1800, with alterations made to the office front in the 1930s. The building is constructed of sandstone and brown brick in Flemish bond, with the roof not visible.

The exterior features 12 concrete-repaired sandstone steps leading to the Row on the north side, with painted stone end-piers that are partly covered. There is a cast-iron railing at the Row front and returning to the steps, which has a central rail intersecting figures of 8 on alternate balusters and a plain top rail. A cast-iron Roman Doric central column supports the structure. The sloped boarded stallboard is 1.74 meters from front to back, and the Row walk is tiled with terrazzo. The shopfront is modern, and a plaster ceiling is present, with a fascia covering the Row-top bressumer.

The upper storeys are brick with painted stone sills and wedge lintels. The third storey features a recessed north sash with removed glazing bars and an inserted 5-light large-pane mullioned and transomed canted oriel on the south side, which is set on timber sub-panels and has a dentilled sill supported by three shaped brackets, along with a dentilled cornice leading to a flat roof. The fourth storey has a dual sash with removed glazing bars on the north side and a now four-pane sash on the south side. A lead rainwater pipe and head are located on the south side, along with a painted stone cornice and low parapet, and there is a lateral chimney at the back.

Inside, the undercroft has been lowered and altered for a newspaper press, featuring two cast-iron Roman Doric columns, timber beams, and joists. The Row and upper storeys are largely lined and do not display any features of special interest.
