Description

This is an undercroft shop, Row shop, and former accommodation and rear dwelling, now used as offices. It was built in 1861 by Edward Hodkinson for Mr. Ewen, a hosier. The building is constructed from sandstone, painted English garden wall bond brickwork, and has a grey slate roof with a ridge running perpendicular to the street.

Externally, the building is four tall storeys, including the undercroft and the Row. It has a single bay and is in a Tudor Revival style. A 20th-century shopfront occupies the street frontage. The undercroft and Row storeys have hollow-chamfered sandstone end piers. The Row-front balustrade features a moulded timber rail above spiral-moulded balusters. Half-octagon responds support a possibly reused 17th-century chamfered bressumer resting on quadrant brackets incorporating mouchettes in the spandrels and end-pendants. There's a sloped boarded stallboard and a flagged Row walk. The frontage to the rear of the Row has a covered door to Number 13 and a modern shopfront. A basket arch, now splatterdashed, spans each end of the Row walk. The interior of the Row shop has a plaster ceiling.

The upper storeys are painted stone-dressed brick. A stone mullioned and transomed window on the third storey has a steep sill and a pediment over the lintel. A stepped three-light mullioned window on the fourth storey has a transom and an upper light over the central portion only. A recessed stone panel is dated 1861. The front gable has a moulded stone cornice with three plump octagonal finials. A lateral chimney is situated further south.

The undercroft is lined. Number 15, the Row shop, could not be inspected, but is noted to contain a lined shop with ancillary rooms including two mid-19th century fireplaces, a 19th-century cast-iron lavatory cistern and wash basin. The upper storeys are occupied by Number 17. The front portion of the interior has plaster cornices.

A narrow rear wing leads to a former dwelling behind, apparently intended for independent occupation. The south face of this dwelling has an altered door within a painted stone case, flanked by sidelights, four square piers, and an entablature. The windows have painted stone sills and cambered arched heads, likely dating from the mid-19th century. A tripartite sash window with 4, 12, 4 panes is on the Row storey; three 12-pane sashes are on the third storey; and two 9-pane sashes are on the fourth storey. Miscellaneous windows are found on the east gable. Rear stone steps lead from the yard to the undercroft. A later 19th-century extension to the south has no visible features of special interest.
