Description
The Roman shrine to Minerva is located in Edgar's Field, Chester, and dates back to the early 2nd century. It features a statue of Minerva carved directly into the red sandstone quarry face. The detail of the statue has suffered significant erosion over time. This shrine is notable as it is the only example of its kind still in its original location in Britain. A 19th-century stone surround with a hood protects the shrine, which was refurbished in the late 20th century. Interpretive material about the shrine can be found at the Grosvenor Museum on Grosvenor Street in Chester.
