Description

Numbers 10 and 12 Row and Numbers 12 and 14 Street are the site of two medieval undercrofts and townhouses, now serving as a shop and stair to licensed premises at street level, with additional licensed premises at Row level. The current structure was likely rebuilt around 1912-1913 by RW Boden for Walker and Knight. It features a timber frame with plaster panels and a shingle roof.

The building has four storeys plus attics and consists of two structural bays. The street level frontage is modern and lacks historical interest, with stone steps leading to the Row at the south end. The fascia at the base of the Row stallboard is decorated with a carved vine pattern. The south pier is made of sandstone, while the north pier is partly stone. There are two intermediate stanchions clad in timber, and the front of the Row walk has a sloping stallboard with a timber handrail supported by ornamental mild steel balusters. The licensed premises facing the Row has a timber-framed design that is not particularly distinguished.

A bressumer supports a jetty on the third storey, featuring paired consoles at the ends and center, along with eight intermediate brackets. There are two canted five-light mullioned and transomed leaded oriels in timber framing, which include diagonal braces on the lower panels and quadrant braces on the upper panels. The jettied fourth storey has two shallow four-light mullioned and transomed canted leaded oriels, also in timber framing, with recessed central and end panels and braced panels on each side of the oriels. A shallow coved jetty supports a pair of front gables, each adorned with a leaded cross-window and herringbone bracing, along with plain bargeboards. The roof behind the gables features a mansard front.

Inside, the shop floor is approximately one meter below pavement level, and there is no accessible cellar beneath. The shop and licensed premises do not exhibit any visible features of special interest.
