Description

Number 16 Street and Nos. 14 & 16 Row is a building located in Chester, originally part of a Roman praetorium and later the site of two medieval undercrofts and town houses. It was rebuilt around 1913 and now functions as a double shop at street level and a public house above. The design is similar to Nos. 12 & 14 Street, likely by architect R.W. Boden.

The exterior features modern shopfronts that are not of particular interest, with a rear passage to the north displaying an 18th-century brick face. The Row front includes a recent brick pier, five timber-clad stanchions, and a post that extends through both street and Row levels at the north-west corner. There is false framing on the north side, and a central post rises from the Row stallboard, set back from the frontage. A timber handrail is supported by ornate mild steel balusters. The pub front has a mock timber-framed style that is also not of particular interest. The upper storeys exhibit a simpler version of the timber framing seen at Nos. 12 & 14 Row, with attenuated jetties at the Row bressumer and beneath the eaves, and four leaded cross-windows on each storey. This property is the northernmost on the now shortened Row.

Inside, the shop floor is approximately one meter below pavement level, with no cellar visible. Ten sandstone hypocaust pillars remain in place at the north-east corner of the shop. Other surfaces in the shop and public house are covered, and no features of special interest are visible.
