Description

4 Watergate Row is a Grade II listed building located in Chester City. It consists of two undercrofts and townhouses that have been converted into offices. The front of the building was rebuilt in the early 19th century, while the rear elevation reflects a mid-18th century character. The interior was remodeled in the 1970s for office use. The exterior features brown Flemish bond brickwork and a slate roof that runs parallel to the street.

The building stands four storeys tall, including the street and Row levels. The street-facing office front is modern, with brick end piers on the Row side. A slender central Tuscan column supports a bressumer over the Row, and there are plain square-section iron railings. The front of the office facing the Row has been rebuilt, and there is a rear passage on the west side. Each upper storey has two 20-pane sash windows with painted stone sills and skew-back flat brick arches, topped with a painted cornice.

The rear elevation, dating from around 1750, was restored in the 1970s and features a 6-panel door with a looped radial-bar overlight set in a reconstructed pilastered timber doorcase. There are two 16-pane sash windows between the door and the rear passage, a moulded stone plinth, and a stringcourse made of corbel bricks set diagonally at the first floor. The second storey has three 24-pane sash windows, while the third storey has three 16-pane dwarf sashes. All sashes are flush, with replaced timber sills and cambered brick arches. A stringcourse of three oversailing courses supports a low stone-capped brick parapet.

Inside, there are no visible internal features of interest, but some sections of what is likely late medieval rubble sandstone walling were noted in 1988.
