Description
The Terra Nova School is a mansion, built in 1779 (as noted by Pevsner), with additions from 1885 by Douglas and subsequent alterations. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with stone dressings and a slate roof. The main block is three storeys and attic, comprising five bays, with a three-storey, three-bay wing extending north and a two-storey and attic, three-bay wing to the south (by Douglas). A stone plinth and a first-floor sill band are present. The three central bays project slightly and are topped by a gable pediment that mirrors the eaves cornice moulding. The windows are recessed sashes with stone sills, flat arches, and glazing bars. An oculus, framed by stone, is set within the pediment.
A projecting brick porch features an ovolo-moulded semicircular stone archivolt, a keystone, and flanking reeded stone pilasters. These pilasters continue upwards, passing a dentil cornice and a brick parapet wall with stone coping, to support ball finials. The porch's outer door is semi-circular headed with nine panels, held on strap hinges, and the internal door is half-glazed with a nine-panel design and a semi-circular headed three-mullion fanlight. The porch interior has dado panelling and side walls with stone ovolo-moulded cross windows featuring leaded glazing. Above the eaves cornice, a brick parapet wall is present, with stone copings to parapet and gables. Gable-end stacks are also visible. The south wing is contemporary with the porch, displaying stone cross windows, leaded glazing, and shaped gables to the centre and south gable end. The north wing, dating to the late 18th century, features recessed sashes and detailing that aligns with the main building.
Inside, the Entrance Hall contains a stone geometrical staircase with shaped step ends, turned oak balusters and a substantial moulded bottom newel. The Dining Room is characterised by panelled walls, panelled beams, and a ceiling divided into panels by moulded wooden beads. There are panelled shutters to the windows, some incorporating carving, and numerous six-panel doors throughout. At first floor level, a screen constructed of Doric columns and pilasters supports a moulded beam, with the spaces between the columns filled with matching balusters to the staircase. On the Landing, a semi-circular headed niche is flanked by six-panel doors with panel linings, with matching doors situated at the north and south ends of the space.
