Description
The shelter on Queen's Promenade in Blackpool is a cast-iron structure built in 1904 and relocated between 1924 and 1930. It was made by the Lion Foundry Company of Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow.
This rectangular shelter features slim cast-iron columns at the corners and centers of the long sides, many of which bear marks from the foundry. The columns are connected by screens at each end and have cruciform central screens. Each round column is topped with scroll capitals and supports the roof beams with three sweeping foliate brackets. The roof is double-swept and ribbed, with a prominent ridge crest. Ogee gutters are positioned above the eaves cornice and discharge water through the bases of the corner columns. The screens include tongue-and-groove lower panels and upper panels that were originally glazed but are now unglazed and partially boarded with plywood.
