Description
The Bolckow tombstones, grave cover, and kerb are located approximately 24 meters east of the chancel of the Church of St. Cuthbert in Marton. This memorial features two tombstones, a grave cover, and a kerb dedicated to four members of the Bolckow family who died between 1858 and 1890. The kerb is made of chamfered red sandstone, while the grave cover is crafted from grey granite, and the tombstones are pink granite with sandstone plinths.
In the center of the plot enclosed by the kerb is a plain double-chamfered grave cover, with the top chamfer forming a large facet. The south face of one tombstone bears the epitaph for Henry William Ferdinand Bolckow of Marton Hall, who lived from 1806 to 1878, while the north face commemorates his wife, Harriet, who died in 1890. At the west end of the plot, there are two slab tombstones, each measuring approximately 120 cm by 85 cm, featuring plinths and chamfered Celtic Calvary cross-shaped heads. Biblical texts and the interlaced "I.H.S." are inscribed on the crosses. The right tombstone has an epitaph for Mary Drearden, the mother of Harriet Bolckow, who died in 1858, and the left tombstone commemorates Elise Caroline Sophie Hopkins, the daughter of H.W.F. Bolckow, who died in 1862. H.W.F. Bolckow was a co-founder of the Middlesbrough iron trade in the mid-19th century. This site is included for its historic interest.
