Erected in 1858, this granite memorial takes the form of a shallow, broad-rimmed vase with a narrow trumpet stem, standing on a three-stopped base and a chamfered two-stepped plinth. The north face of the base is inscribed with the following text: "THIS GRANITE VASE WAS ERECTED BY H.W.F. BOLCKOW OF MARTON HALL A.D. 1858 TO MARK THE SITE OF THE COTTAGE IN WHICH CAPTAIN JAMES COOK, THE WORLD CIRCUMNAVIGATOR, WAS BORN OCTOBER 27TH 1728."
