Description
The Armstrong/Ingledew Fenison tombstone, dating from 1812, is located approximately 10 meters east of the Church of St. Cuthbert in Marton, Middlesbrough. This Grade II listed tombstone commemorates Robert Armstrong, James Ingledew, and Joseph Fenison. It is made of sandstone and measures about 92 centimeters by 137 centimeters. The east face features a hollow-chamfered border and a square panel at the top, which is carved with three coffins inscribed with the initials J.F., R.A., J.I., and the numbers E27, E28, E39, flanked by winged angel heads. The worn epitaph notes that the three men died on October 11, 1812, after entering a well filled with carbonic acid gas, warning others not to venture into wells without first checking if a candle will burn at the bottom, indicating safety.
