Description

The loggia, built around 1860, is located approximately 20 meters south of the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Stewart Park, Marton. It was originally part of Marton Hall, which was demolished in 1960. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a flat roof in an Italianate style. It is a single storey with seven bays.

The south face has stilted segment-headed openings surrounded by pilaster-and-keyed-archivolt surrounds. Pilasters between the bays extend to an entablature and blocking course. There is a short projecting wall at the north-east angle, which has chamfered quoins on the south face, and similar one-bay returns. The north face features six corresponding openings, a blank center, and a slightly recessed bay at the west end. The loggia includes arcading with a moulded plinth, impost strings, a cornice, and a shallow parapet with two water shoots. At the ends, there are two openings that hold ornate mid-20th century wrought iron screens.

Inside, both walls have a similar treatment to the external south face, with a blind middle bay in the north wall. Between the second and third bays, there is a transverse arch that springs from corbels. The floor is stone-flagged, with a patterned encaustic-tiled middle bay.
