Description
The war memorial in Spennymoor was built in 1923 by E.C. Kenmir for the Spennymoor Urban District, with the site donated by the Weardale Iron and Coal Company. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, it features wrought iron railings and a gate, designed in a Baroque style. The memorial is supported by four Ionic piers on a large square base, which holds an entablature. Above this is a panelled square base of smaller piers supporting another entablature topped with a dome. The memorial includes prominent cornices on both entablatures and the upper base.
The lower base has square-section blocks, with a low-relief sword and the inscription 'PRO DEO ET PRO PATRIA' on the west side, while the names of the fallen are listed on the other three sides without ranks. Panels sloping from the base on the north and south sides bear the names of those who died in the Second World War. A long inscription below the cross honors the men who fell 'while defending our liberty' and concludes with a tribute to their enduring honor as 'THE GLORIOUS DEAD'.
Surrounding the memorial is a square enclosure formed by dwarf walls with chamfered coping. The railings are made of square-section iron, featuring top and bottom rails, with the principals set into the walls. The heads of the railings graduate downwards between the principals, and there is a narrow gate in a similar style on the west side.
