Description

Shildon Signal Box is a signal box built in 1887, with alterations made in 1928 and 1984. It was constructed for the Central Division of the North-Eastern Railway Company Limited, possibly designed by Thomas Prosser, the architect for the North-Eastern Railway. This signal box is a variant of the Central Division's Type C2 design.

The building is made of red brick and timber, topped with a slate roof and stands two stories tall. The north side, which faces the tracks, features two glazing bar windows with three panes each, set into a large blank panel. Above these windows is a projecting balcony with iron railings, and below it are six windows arranged in a row, with timber boarded panels above. The outer two windows on either side are two-light sliding sashes, while the central two windows have fixed lights, both with three panes each.

The east front has a blank ground floor and two windows above, both with four panes each, along with a balcony. The south front, facing the street, has a blank wall with a central projecting brick stack, with the upper section rebuilt in the 20th century. The west front features an external staircase leading to a half-glazed door and two windows to the left.

Inside, the signal box retains a McKenzie & Holland pattern 16 frame lever system that was installed in 1928, which was reduced from 55 levers to 42 levers in 1984. This signal box is well designed and maintains group value, with a well-preserved, albeit reduced, lever frame for controlling and changing the points.
