Description

Burton Homes consists of a row of single-storey almshouses built in a half-H plan, with a courtyard that opens to the road. Constructed from coursed squared rock-faced red sandstone rubble with Bath stone dressings, the buildings feature a red tile roof. The chimneys have been rebuilt using blue engineering brick, and the rear elevation is entirely brick. The architectural style is reminiscent of 17th-century almshouses found in East Anglia.

At the center, there is a hall with double plank doors set under a three-centred arch, which has roses and foliage carved in the spandrels. This hall is flanked by stone-framed rectangular windows with oval frames within. Above the doors, there is a plaque that reads 'BURTON HOMES FOUNDED BY COLONEL HENRY BURTON M.D. AND MISS S.E. BURTON. ERECTED 1913'. Above this plaque is a stone-framed triple window with a configuration of 4 : 6 + 6 : 4 panes, with the central part featuring an arched head. The gabled roof is adorned with Jacobean finials on the kneelers and a small Bath stone decoration at the apex.

On either side of the central hall, there are six houses, each featuring a three-light mullioned window set in a large gable, alongside a doorway with a timber porch. Each window light consists of 4 over 6 panes, and there is a tall brick stack for each house. The two end houses on either side are slightly advanced towards the road and include a small window in the gable end. Each house also has two additional windows on the rear wall. The interior details were not available at the time of the resurvey.
