Description
6 River Row is a house forming part of an early group of industrial terraces built at Abercanaid between 1852 and 1861, possibly by the Plymouth Iron Company for workers at the Abercanaid Pit and Pentrebach Forge. The original development comprised seven terraces facing east between the river and canal, with further terraces to the north. Of these, five terraces are listed, though all have been altered since the listing in 1975.
The houses are relatively generous in size for the era, following a double-fronted design similar to those previously at the Triangle, Pentrebach (now demolished). They are narrow, with roof spans of 4 to 5 metres, and were originally built without rear extensions, benefiting from access paths to both the front and rear. Originally, the houses featured a central passageway and a rear staircase. They were constructed of rubble stone with small-paned sash windows, slate roofs, and stone chimneys, with stone voussoirs to the openings on both floors. The facades are slightly offset to accommodate larger kitchen chimneys, creating mirrored pairs. Front or rear gardens were accessed via a footpath running along the terrace line.
The original rear walls were of rubble stone, and initially contained a small door and pantry window on one side, along with a small upper window. Number 6, the end terrace house, now has 20th-century plate-glass sash windows and a 20th-century door with overlight, with no visible chimneys. The right-hand end and rear walls are of rubble stone and include a blocked rear door. The houses backing onto Nightingale Street (numbers 70-81) have generally been extended to the rear, whilst the others retain their original depth. Other similar houses further south in Nightingale Street appear to be of a later date and have also been altered, but contribute to the character of the wider settlement.
