Description
The Dry-Moat Walls are a Grade II* listed structure, measuring about 16 feet (4.87 meters) deep and up to 42 feet (12.80 meters) wide. They enclose a platform with a square bastion trace design, featuring a square plan and arrow-shaped corner bastions. The scarp and counterscarp of the moat are constructed from coursed rubble limestone, with ashlar quoins. The floor of the moat, located within the angle of the northwest bastion, was used as a ball court. A 20th-century steel stanchion bridge crosses the moat to the north, replacing the original timber trestle bridge. This site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
