Description

Nos 32 and 33 New Street are probably largely a late 18th century remodelling of an earlier structure, with the facade likely dating no later than around 1800. Brickwork in the gable end and rear wing, along with the stacks, suggests an earlier 18th century origin. A rear range to New Street was built around 1830, likely originally as a row of three houses, although the building nearest the frontage has subsequently served as a rear wing.

Nos 32 and 33 are brick with a slate roof. The building is three storeys high and two windows wide. The ground floor frontage was updated in 1995, but the upper floors retain original details, including two wide, 16-pane hornless sash windows with flat arched heads on each floor. There is a moulded eaves cornice. Axial stacks are located on the rear corners. A short rear wing features similar windows, with some 19th century insertions on the lower floors, and an upper window beneath a wide dormer gable.

The terrace on New Street is also brick with a slate roof and end wall stacks. It consists of a five-window range, with three distinctive tall doorcases featuring incised decoration, plain panelled doors with overlights, and 12-pane sash windows with flat arched gauged brick heads on each floor.

Nos 32 and 33 are listed as a substantially late 18th century building with earlier origins, retaining much of its original character despite the ground floor remodelling. The rear range, including Nos 1 and 2 New Street, is a fine example of early 19th century coherent urban development. The buildings together contribute significantly to the townscape on a prominent town centre site.
