Description

The Yat is a house dating back to the 17th century, with significant additions and alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of whitened rubble stone with slate roofs, featuring decorative cusped barge boards. The roofs are punctuated by a gable stack on the right and two lateral stacks on the left-hand gabled bay, all with blue and yellow brick shafts.

The front of the house is divided into two main sections. The centre and left are dominated by a two-and-a-half storey gabled bay, incorporating the original entrance and forming the parlour wing of the 17th-century house. To the right of this is a three-storey, two-window 18th-century extension, clearly separated by a vertical joint. The majority of the windows are two-light casements with leaded lights. The gabled bay contains a fielded-panel door on its right side, with two small glazed panels, and a two-light window to its left, positioned beneath a hood mould. The upper storey of the gabled bay features two similar windows with eroded drip moulds, and a three-light attic window also under a drip mould. The right side of the building has two-light windows in the lower and middle storeys, and two similar windows in the upper storey beneath the eaves.

A lower, 19th-century gabled link extends further to the right, it boasts a two-pane sash window in the lower storey and a similar sash window illuminating an oriel window above. Attached to the far right end is a former dovecote, with a camber-headed boarded door in the lower storey. The upper storey of the dovecote is corbelled out and features a small window beneath a pyramidal roof. The right side wall of the dovecote, facing the road, displays a blocked segmental window and a small-pane window in the lower storey, set within a flat arch.

Behind the dovecote, a two-storey 19th-century service wing stands with two-light windows in each storey facing the road, and corresponding windows in its rear gable end. The rear of the main house includes a late 20th-century conservatory, and a two-light upper-storey window. The gable end of the original parlour wing projects forward to the right, with added raked buttresses. It incorporates a two-light and one-light window in the lower storey, a two-light window to the side of the upper storey, with a corresponding blocked window on the left, and a small attic window. The side wall of this gable bay is built into the bank.

Inside, the central entrance hall, created in the 18th century, features a dog-leg staircase with turned newels. To the right of the hall is an exposed close-studded partition with evidence of a former door head, likely the original division between the hall and parlour, providing the most convincing evidence of an earlier hall. The room to the left of the entrance, the original parlour, contains an ovolo-moulded spine beam. The room behind it, probably originally a kitchen, has a fireplace with a timber lintel. The room to the right of the entrance also features a fireplace with a large timber lintel.
