Description

The Church of St Marcella and Deiniol is a Georgian-style church. It was rebuilt in 1778 and is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof, hipped over the chancel. The church comprises an aisleless nave, a west tower, a north transept, and a polygonal chancel. The nave windows are tall with round heads, while those in the chancel have square heads. The elegant west tower is balustraded with urns surmounted by weather vanes in the shape of cockerels at the corners, features tall arched, louvred bell openings on each face, and incorporates a clock face on the south and west faces. A stone string course runs around the building, and the west face originally contained a tall arched doorway, now with a stone architrave and console brackets. The south door of the nave is set within a pedimented surround with 20th-century joinery. The gabled ends of the nave and transept are treated as pediments.

Inside, there are wide arched openings leading to the chancel and the north transept. A similar arch once provided access to a west-end gallery, which was later modified to accommodate a large organ. The arches rise from imposts and are coffered on the underside. The north transept contains a former family pew in a balcony, accessible by a narrow staircase.

The church includes 19th-century pitch pine pews and an entrance lobby that incorporates part of an 18th-century panelled entrance screen. The chancel furnishings are of oak, and there is an octagonal stone font of a similar date. Stained glass includes a window from 1860 by Hardman and an exceptional window signed Fr Eginton and dated 1788. This window contains 21 panels depicting heraldry related to the Edisbury, Yorke, and Cust families, alongside an inscription commemorating the church's rebuilding in 1778. Other stained glass dates from the mid and later 19th century and includes heraldic glass in the chancel relating to the Yorke family.

The church retains a collection of 18th and 19th-century wall monuments. On the north side is a monument to Philip Yorke, died 1804, featuring a grieving figure beside a broken column by Westmacott; and a Neoclassical plaque to John Edgeworth of Bryn-y-Grog, died 1827, by Wright & Harrison of Chester. On the south side is a monument to Elizabeth Yorke, died 1779, featuring an obelisk with a white marble sarcophagus and Yorke arms by Tyler & Ashton; a monument to John Meller, died 1733, with side volutes and a shield in a cartouche against a pyramid by Scheemakers; and a monument to Anne Jemima Yorke, died 1770, featuring a marble sarcophagus supporting an obelisk against which is a seated female figure and a rose bush by William Tyler. Two boards of early 19th-century character are located in the former west gallery, one commemorating the rebuilding of the church and tower, and the other listing benefactors and charities.
