Description
Garth-y-neuadd Farmhouse is a largely 17th-century L-shaped house built of local limestone, with a front range of four bays. The front elevation incorporates a fine two-storey timber-framed porch. The masonry is largely axe-dressed, with the exception of the front elevation to the left of the porch, which has been refronted in red brick, retaining stone quoins. Slate roofs are present along with very tall axe-dressed chimney stacks incorporating neck bands. End-chimneys are visible to the north and south, and an axial chimney is situated opposite the porch.
The windows on the front elevation are probably contemporary with the partial refronting in brickwork. These are mostly two-light diamond-paned casements, with those in the stone part having red brick jambs. Limestone sills and lintels are also present. First-floor windows in the brickwork section to the left rise through the eaves, each covered by a gabled dormer hood. A similar window with lead cames is located on the upper floor of the porch. At the rear, windows are of the casement type, set within brickwork-dressed openings.
The timber-framed porch has two panels on each storey, plus diagonal square framing in the gable above. The upper storey overhangs the lower at the front and sides, supported by posts with arch bracing. The lower storey includes side seats and small windows on either side of the door. The timbers of the porch display stepped tongue stops to the chamfers. A carved gable finial adorns the porch.
The two-storey cross range extending to the east comprises two distinct phases of construction, marked by a masonry break. On the north elevation, it features a two-light window with a brick cambered head, a boarded door, and two similar upper windows set against the eaves. The front part retains a portion of a broad corner-post below the wall-plate, indicating earlier timber-framed origins; only a small section of the original timber frame is visible. The rear portion has a substantial chimney breast against its gable end.
The entrance now leads into a lobby, but the original plan-form was of the chimney-backing-onto-entry type. A cruck-framed hall is located to the left of the entrance, with a chimney inserted within one of the two full cruck trusses, and a Victorian range incorporated around the fireplace. A post and panel screen is present within another cruck truss, extending to the first floor; the hall ceiling has been restored. Later spurs were added to the crucks during a 17th-century re-roofing. A 19th-century staircase rises against the front wall. Studded partitions (some on stone plinths), boarded doors, and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are found throughout the interior. The structure steps down at the right-hand end with a further cruck truss, where one blade has been cut below floor level. The cross range to the left features a massively chamfered cross beam.
