Description
Cwm Eithin comprises numbers 66 to 76 Vale Street, a terrace of six brick-built houses with glazed brick facades. The upper four houses (numbers 66, 68, 70, and 72) feature decorative banding in yellow and blue bricks, while all are roofed in continuous slate with end and shared chimneys. The chimneys to the upper four have banding, with oversailing and laced courses to numbers 74 to 76. The chimneys to numbers 68 and 70 have been reduced slightly. All houses have oversailing and corbelled eases; the upper four have additional banding to the eaves. The ground floor of each house is raised slightly above a basement floor and accessed via a flight of low parapeted steps.
Numbers 66 to 72 are arranged with mirror symmetry, so that numbers 66 and 68 are reflected by numbers 70 and 72. Each unit spans two bays with arched entrances, those to the central pair (numbers 68 and 70) correspondingly paired. The central units have large segmentally-arched tripartite windows with expressed keys and imposts to the arches. The outer units have single-storey canted bay windows with flat, parapeted roofs. All have recessed original doors with tall glazed upper panels and plain-glazed segmental overlights, with plain Victorian sashes throughout. The second floor has two segmentally-arched windows to each central unit (numbers 68 and 70), and paired and single arched windows to the outer units (numbers 66 and 72), with banding at sill and springing level. Each unit has a large glazed dormer to the attic floor with a hipped slate roof, oversailing corbelled eaves and finials. The dormer lights are arched, paired to the front and 4-light to the sides.
Numbers 74 and 76 have entrances as before with 2-storey canted bays to the right and left respectively. These bays have hipped slate roofs, oversailing corbelled eaves, and stone sillcourses returned onto the main facade as decorative terracotta banding. Number 74 has single first-floor sashes to the left unit and paired sashes to the right unit, with an additional ground-floor entrance immediately to the right of the main entrance serving as a through-passage to the rear. Number 76 has paired first-floor sashes. The second floor has paired small rectangular windows and paired arched windows above the bays, with large gables featuring deep verges and cusped and pierced bargeboards with geometric pendant-finials. Decorative terracotta rosettes appear in the gable apexes. All windows have plain sashes and projecting stone sills.
Each house has low brick forecourt walls with sandstone copings. All houses except number 74 have simple surmounting railings.
