Description

Tanyrallt is a Georgian house built in 1755 for John Ellis, Archdeacon of Bangor. It has undergone some alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries and features a square plan. Originally, it had formal gardens that sloped down towards the river. The house is two stories with a basement and has a three-window façade covered in painted pebbledash. It has hipped slate roofs with rendered chimney stacks. The first-floor windows have been modified to create broader small pane casements, while the ground floor features twelve-pane sash windows and sliding sash windows in the basement. The central entrance is highlighted by a timber hood and a half-glazed door, accessed by twin flights of stone stairs that curve forward on either side; it previously had a trellised porch.

The building includes three parallel cross ranges. There is an original splayed bay window on the right and a similar bay window added to the left side in the 19th century, both with small pane sash glazing. A modern timber building is attached to the right, and a low outbuilding from the 19th century is attached to the left. The rear elevation is two stories with four windows; it features a central twelve-pane sash stairwell window with broad glazing bars, and below it is a six-panel door with a modern hood, along with various sash windows.

Inside, Tanyrallt retains exquisite Georgian details, including a Chinese Chippendale style staircase with carved tread ends and fluted reveals at the windows. The entrance hall and the main room on the right have fireplace overmantels, with the former featuring lugged detailing and the latter a broken pediment with bolection moulding. Additional details include lugged architraves on the doorways, six-panel doors, panelled shutters, dado rails, and dentil cornices. The first-floor rooms are accessed through landing arches adorned with fluted pilasters and keystones, and there is a simple Georgian stone fireplace in the right-hand room.
