Description
Pendref Chapel is a 2-storey building constructed from snecked rubble with freestone dressings, which include quoins, cornices, an eaves band, and a plinth. The chapel features slate roofs with swept eaves on the outer bays. The central bay is taller and more prominent, topped with a pediment that has a finial and an inscribed date plaque. The main window consists of three semi-circular headed lights with foliage capitals, grouped under a trefoil-shaped head adorned with punched roundels, and has a bracketed cill band. Below this, there are paired bracketed doorcases with panelled double doors. The outer bays contain modern cross frame windows with pedimented frames, segmental on the ground floor. The side elevations have single return bays with arched headed windows, keystones to the gallery, and pedimented lower windows. Sash windows with marginal glazing bars are present throughout the 5-bay side elevations, with arched headed windows in the gallery and dividing full height pilasters. A modern kitchen extension is located at the left rear.
The rubble boundary wall along the roadside is topped with good cast iron railings featuring classical arched ornamentation. There are entrances on either side with gate piers and iron gates that share a similar design. The walls and railings curve out at both ends, with the railings being partly broken, extending to the left as far as No 102 High Street and to the right towards the lane between the churchyard and The Harp Inn.
Inside, the chapel has a rectangular galleried layout with an ornamental ribbed pattern on the ceiling, which includes a central rose. A bracketed and coved cornice runs over pilasters linked by window hoodmoulds. At the far end, a semi-circular arch opens onto the aspsidal choir gallery, which features a ribbed and panelled ceiling and an arched headed end window. The gallery is steeply raked with a panelled front, supported by cast iron columns. The ground floor seating is raked at the front end. The pulpit has a curved front with finely carved panels depicting biblical scenes, and steps sweep down to either side, featuring turned balusters. Cast iron railings enclose the ‘set fawr’ platform.
