Description

Cardigan Bridge is a 5-arch bridge made of blue lias rubble stone, dating back to 1726. It features recessed cut-stone voussoirs on the arches and cutwaters on both sides. The cutwaters on the west side were obscured during the widening that took place in 1872-1873. On the east side, the cutwaters extend to full height, creating pedestrian refuges, except for one located south of the center, which is capped short and has a plaque above it that reads, "This arch was built in the year 1726 W Jones." However, this plaque may have been reset, as historical prints from the mid-18th century show the cutwater at full height. Additionally, there is a small flood arch at the south end of the bridge. On the west side, the original arches are visible beneath the more elliptical arches added in the 1872-1873 work, which also feature similar cut stone voussoirs.
