Description

The Wye Bridge, also known as the M48 Viaduct, is a cable-stayed bridge that crosses the River Wye and continues on piers over the Beachley peninsula. It has an overall length of 1,153 meters, with 408 meters dedicated to the Wye crossing, featuring a main span of 234 meters and two side spans. The bridge has a streamlined deck made of continuously welded steel torsional box construction, which is supported over the river by steel cable ties arranged in a single plane along the center-line of the bridge. This is carried by a pair of steel masts located above the piers. Each mast originally supported one set of cables but now carries two. The bridge includes open hand rails and stretched steel wire crash barriers. It is supported by slender, splayed inverted-U concrete piers on concrete beam foundations. The eastern sections of the bridge, including its extension over the Beachley peninsula, are located in England, specifically in the Tidenham parish of the Forest of Dean District.
