Description
Duddingston House is a castellated building, likely dating to 1822. It was probably constructed around the same time as a nearby steading. The house is built of droved ashlar and has two storeys, with crenellated parapets and angle towers. Pointed mullioned windows are topped with hood mouldings. A porch is present, and an inset date stone indicates an earlier house existed on the site, dating to 1585.
The house originally belonged to the Dundases of Duddingstone. It was sold by Gabriel Hamilton Dundas of Duddingstone and of Westburn, Lanark (Lanarkshire), to John, the 5th Earl of Hopetoun, around 1830.
