Description
3 Station Cottage is a terrace of four single-storey cottages built around 1886 to accommodate railway workers. They are situated just east of the former Aberfoyle Station, which has been demolished, and their front elevations would have faced the railway tracks, now converted into a footpath. Although the cottages no longer have their original windows or doors, they remain largely unaltered and are the last surviving buildings associated with Aberfoyle Station. The station, which opened in 1885, played a crucial role in the growth of Aberfoyle due to the influx of tourists in the late 19th century. The cottages were designed to convey a sense of quality, as evidenced by the use of sandstone for all elevations, which is quite rare in the area compared to the local whin stone.
The principal south elevation of the cottages is symmetrical, with each of the three-bay cottages featuring a central door that is sheltered by a shallow timber gabled porch, which is adorned with a terracotta ridge finial and a timber pendant. The flanking bays contain tripartite shouldered windows. The cottage at the western end of the row is slightly set forward at both the front and rear and is the only one with an original central lean-to outshot at the back, suggesting it may have been intended for a more senior employee.
The side elevations, both east and west, are blank, while the simple rear elevations consist of two narrow windows on one side of the door and a wider window on the opposite side. Cottage number three has a modern timber lean-to extension.
The cottages are constructed from stugged snecked cream sandstone, with uPVC windows and doors that are out of character with the original design. The pitched roof features overhanging sparred eaves, with two coped ridge stacks and one gable head stack on the west end, although one stack is missing. Access to the interiors was not possible during the 2005 resurvey.
