Description
Keir House is a three-storey, harled mid-Georgian building designed in an E-plan, with its main elevation facing east. It features an 11-window frontage, with the central three bays advanced and a Roman Doric doorway. The house retains some impressive interior work and includes large office courts. A tall two-storey drawing room wing was added to the southwest in 1820, designed by architect D. Hamilton and completed in 1831, which also showcases notable interior features.
The central three bays on the east front were destroyed, and a five-window, four-storey bow was inserted, along with a two-storey northeast porte cochere, an entrance gate, and a connecting east arcade, as well as terraces to the south, east, and west, and additional offices built between 1849 and 1851. The porte cochere was raised to four storeys with a French roof, and modifications to the arcade and ironwork were likely made in 1863. There were considerable interior alterations from 1849 onwards.
A two-storey northwest wing and further offices were constructed between 1899 and 1901, designed by Sir R.R. Anderson. In 1912, part of the east arcade was demolished to insert a chapel, which is aisleless in Renaissance style with an apse, featuring a spectacular marble and mosaic interior designed by Anrep and Balfour Paul of Rowand Anderson and Paul. The architect for the original house is currently unknown.
