Description

The Macgregor Monument, located at Lanrick, is a late 18th or early 19th century structure erected by Sir Evan John Murray MacGregor, likely between 1800 and 1850. The monument is designed to resemble an ashlar-faced tree, with undulating surfaces and visible old branch scars and lopped-off branches that have been finely modelled. A serrated parapet tops the trunk, above which sits a three-column Roman Doric rotunda. This rotunda originally housed a single Roman Doric column, which is now in pieces on the ground. The column was capped by an urn, which is also now on the ground. The monument incorporates pyramid-capped pedestals surrounding the central column. The Macgregor family badge, a tree, served as inspiration for the monument’s design.
