4 Braxfield Row, New Lanark Road, New Lanark

1 Braxfield Row, located on New Lanark Road in New Lanark, dates from around 1785 to 1795. It is a 2- and 3-storey terrace of mill workers' houses, featuring 30 bays and an additional exposed basement at the rear. The terrace is designed to step down twice to accommodate the sloping ground from west to east. The exterior is constructed of random sandstone rubble with droved and stugged ashlar dressings, while the east gable is harled. The windows are arranged in a regular pattern, with symmetrical 3-bay units that include timber-boarded doors flanked by windows. Some sections of the terrace feature steps that ascend or descend to the front doors, which are accessed by a 'cut' in the pavement. A cambered cobbled strip runs the length of the terrace at the rear, equipped with a central drain.

The windows have 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames. The building has ashlar-coped rubble stacks topped with small black cans and a slate roof.

Inside, few original features remain due to a renovation in the late 1970s. Some chimney openings and details, such as an iron hook for cooking purposes on the lower level, are still present, along with a carved stone architrave at number 6.
